2013 Path to Excellence Awards Information

The National Research Corporation Patient and Family Experience Committee selected Path to Excellence award recipients based on their achievement within categories that patients have identified as being most important to the quality of their care. The award is bestowed only on those organizations ranked by patients as being a top performer or the most improved performer in one of the following categories:


Rate Hospital

Rate Hospital – less than 100 beds

Four facilities with less than 100 beds were selected based on their performance on the Inpatient Rate Hospital question for the time period of April 2012 – March 2013 out of 238 facilities*. Two top performing facilities had the highest percentage of patients rating them a 9 or 10. These two facilities both exhibited performance at or above a 79% positive score. Two most improved facilities showed the highest increase in the percentage of patients rating them a 9 or 10 from the time period of April 2011 – March 2012 to April 2012 – March 2013. These two facilities both saw increases on the Inpatient Rate Hospital question at or above 7 points top box (9 or 10).

Rate Hospital – 100 to 300 beds

Four facilities with 100 to less than 300 beds were selected based on their performance on the Inpatient Rate Hospital question for the time period of April 2012 – March 2013 out of 190 facilities*. Two top performing facilities had the highest percentage of patients rating them a 9 or 10. These two facilities both exhibited performance at or above a 79% positive score.  Two most improved facilities showed the highest increase in the percentage of patients rating them a 9 or 10 from the time period of April 2011 – March 2012 to April 2012 – March 2013. These two facilities both saw increases on the Inpatient Rate Hospital question at or above 7 points top box (9 or 10), representing statistically significant increases.

Rate Hospital – 300 beds or more

Four facilities with 300 beds or more were selected based on their performance on the Inpatient Rate Hospital question for the time period of April 2012 – March 2013 out of 96 facilities*. Two top performing facilities had the highest percentage of patients rating them a 9 or 10. These two facilities both exhibited performance at or above a 79% positive score.   Two most improved facilities showed the highest increase in the percentage of patients rating them a 9 or 10 from the time period of April 2011 – March 2012 to April 2012 – March 2013. These two facilities both saw increases on the Inpatient Rate Hospital question at or above 7 points top box (9 or 10), representing statistically significant increases.

Rate Hospital – Children’s Hospital

Two children’s hospitals were selected based on their performance on the Pediatric Inpatient Rate Hospital question for the time period of April 2012 – March 2013 out of a total of 23 facilities**. Two top performing facilities had the highest percentage of patients rating them a 9 or 10. These two facilities both exhibited performance at or above an 84% positive score.   Two most improved facilities showed the highest increase in the percentage of patients rating them a 9 or 10 from the time period of April 2011 – March 2012 to April 2012 – March 2013. These two facilities both saw increases on the Pediatric Inpatient Rate Hospital question at or above 3 points top box (9 or 10).

Rate Doctor

Rate Doctor (Adult)

Four organizations were selected based on their performance on the Adult Clinician & Group Rate Provider question for the time period of April 2012 – March 2013 out of a total of 136 organizations*. Two top performing organizations had the highest percentage of patients rating the doctor a 9 or 10. These two organizations both exhibited performance at or above an 86% positive score. Two most improved organizations showed the highest increase in the percentage of patients rating the doctor a 9 or 10 from the time period of April 2011 – March 2012 to April 2012 – March 2013. These two organizations both saw increases on the Adult Clinician & Group Rate Provider question at or above 8 points top box (9 or 10), representing statistically significant increases.

Rate Doctor (Pediatric)

Four organizations were selected based on their performance on the Pediatric Clinician & Group Rate Provider question for the time period of April 2012 – March 2013 out of a total of 68 organizations*. Two top performing organizations had the highest percentage of patients rating the doctor a 9 or 10. These two organizations both exhibited performance at or above an 86% positive score. Two most improved organizations showed the highest increase in the percentage of patients rating the doctor a 9 or 10 from the time period of April 2011 – March 2012 to April 2012 – March 2013. These two organizations both saw increases on the Pediatric Clinician & Group Rate Provider question at or above 6 points top box (9 or 10).

Improvement Planner Champion

The Improvement Planner Champion award was designed to identify the organizations that most successfully leveraged Catalyst’s Improvement Planner tool to help drive improvement in Patient-Centered Care. Two organizations were selected based on the number of Improvement Plans created during the time period of April 2012 – March 2013 that yielded a statistically significant increase for the plan’s target question. Both of these two organizations had over 30 different Improvement Plans showing statistically significant improvement.

Patient Outreach Program Top Performer

The Patient Outreach Program Top Performers were selected based on their performance on the overall satisfaction with care at the facility question for the time period of April 2012 – March 2013 out of a total of 77 organizations*. These two top performing organizations had the highest percentage of patients saying that they were satisfied for the time period of April 2012 – March 2013.  Both organizations both had greater than 96% of patients saying they were satisfied overall with care at the facility.

Value-Based Purchasing Champion

The Value-based Purchasing Champion award was designed to identify the organizations who had showed the greatest amount of points achieved between the Baseline Period of April 2010 to December 2010 and the Performance Period of April 2012 and December 2012 based on HCAHPS data for Fiscal Year 2014. Three facilities were selected based on their overall performance for the time period of April 2012 – December 2012 out of a total of 395 facilities***.

Patient-Centered Care Champion

Three facilities were selected based on their overall performance within each Adult Inpatient Dimensions of Patient-Centered Care for the time period of April 2012 – March 2013. These facilities had the highest combined percentages of patients rating them positively in at least three of the eight Dimensions of Patient-Centered Care out of 317 facilities****.

One facility was selected based on their performance within each Adult Inpatient Dimensions of Patient-Centered Care for the time period of April 2012 – March 2013. Each facility had one of the highest combined percentages of patients rating them positively on the Eight Dimensions of Patient-Centered Care out of 317 facilities.
